Cochineal + Eco Dyeing Workshop in Oaxaca, Mexico

January 10 + 11, 2020 :: 10 am - 3 pm

Join Ms Amy Taylor and Tenido a Mano's, Elsa Sanchez Díaz, for a once-in-a-lifetime natural dye workshop at Elsa's indoor/outdoor studio in the heart of Oaxaca City, Mexico.

In this 2-day workshop, we will learn two distinct natural dye practices. Day 1 will focus on the whimsical art of eco dyeing - using fresh flowers to create stunning watercolor-esq patterns on silk scarves. On day 2 we will experiment and explore the various colors of cochineal, a unique insect native to Mexico that yields sensational fuschias, reds, and purples. Cochineal insects have been used to dye fabric, cosmetics, and food for over 600 years and produce an incredible range of colors.

Tenido a Mano (Elsa Sanchez Díaz) is a natural dyer in Oaxaca, Mexico whose mission is to preserve the Mexican methods and materials of natural dyeing. Díaz offers workshops and hand crafted products to raise awareness of natural dyeing's history and importance in contemporary society.
Amy Taylor is a natural dyer and textile artist living and working in Chicago. She creates exquisite textiles using only natural dye materials such as plants, insects, and mineral salts. With a passion for eco-friendly materials and ethical fashion, Amy strives to share her love of the history and chemistry of natural dyes with anyone who will listen.

This workshop will include dye materials, some fabric, and light refreshments. Travel and hotel arrangements are the responsibility of the customer.

Cancellations :: Cancellations made 2 weeks or more prior to the workshop will receive a 50% refund. Cancellations made less than 2 weeks before the workshop are non-refundable.
